How Did The Blue Jays Get Its Color?
by Emma N.
Many years ago, the Blue Jays took over the woods. All birds obeyed and would do anything for them. They treated the Blue Jays as Kings and Queens. Blue Jays at that time only had red and pink colors. They were popular because of their unique colors. Then, one day, another bird entered the woods of Blue Jays. The bird said that it is also a blue jay and that it is called Azul. Instead of having pink and reddish colors, it had blue instead. All the birds were terrified and shocked that someone barged into their property. All the Blue Jays admired Azul’s colors because his colors differed from all the other birds.
“How did you get that type of color?” asked one of the Blue Jays.
Azul replied, “I got this color because I have been wise and trustworthy to the god Khroma, and then the god gave me color. I became trustworthy by helping the poor birds out in the wild, and I am always persistent.”
Azul went on to tell his brave story. Then, all the Blue Jays admired Azul’s beautiful color and the fantastic story he just told. All the blue jays became jealous of Azul. They rushed to see the god Khroma because they wanted the same color. Once they reached the god, they politely asked if they could have the blue color, too. God Khroma thought hard about it.
The god replied, “All I see in you is selfish and greedy. You would only show off your beautiful wings and not have respect for other birds. That is why you will not get what you deserve until you are better than before.”
God Khroma then disappeared in thin air, and sadly, all the blue jays returned.
Waiting for them, Azul asked, “Why didn’t your feathers turn blue?”
All the Blue Jays said sadly, “We were disrespectful and not wise.”
They then made Azul the leader of the Blue Jays. Since then, the Blue Jays have been granted their vivid blue colors by the god Khroma.
